Abstract
Purpose: Speech-language pathologists in rehabilitation center provide intervention for communication challenges and dysphagia that are common in cases of severe facial burns because of hypertrophic scar formation, ventilator use, prolonged or multiple intubations, and tracheostomy tubes. Our objective was to analyze burn patients referred to speech pathology for speech and language evaluation.

Methods: We discuss our rehabilitation services as members of a burn team. We also review speech-language evaluation and treatment strategies and present forty-nine patients with facial burns who gained from our intervention.
Results: A retrospective study of burn patients admitted to our center and evaluated by speech pathology from January 2007 through November 2008 was performed. Of the 49 patients, 7 had a follow-up speech examination. The average age was 39 £«/? 12 years. 40 patients had a thermal burn with an average total body surface area burn of 34% £«/? 20%. There was an improvement of articulatory value after speech therapy.

Conclusion: Education of burn care teams on the benefits of speech ? language pathologists inclusion is needed. Potential benefits in pain and medical management reducing length of hospitalization and increasing cost-effective care by inclusion of SLPs in burn care management warrants further research.
